The Cost of Not Understanding Development and Delivery
Years ago I used to have a status on my instant messengers — “I’ve lost my watch”.
A summary of a realization that the investors hook me to a dream of product development and soon to make the investment worthy they pull in some customers with high hopes like — having the alien from Mars as your pet in the shortest time. And start chasing me to deliver the alien in the shortest time by any means.
And they become allergic to the “develop” word and keep pushing for “delivery”. And always keep reminding me of my watch. So one day I replied — “I’ve lost my watch”. And so I quit and tagged this status on my IM.
But my quitting is not going to change the world and I have to eat, so I came back and removed the status.
A bit like, okay I am ready, f*** me.
This vaguely created race through over-committing introduces the
super character “Delivery Man”. And he carries a “magic push button”. He pushes and output comes out. And everyone is happy for now. They forget that “every magic comes with a cost” and the cost is called debt. And if the magic goes wrong the cost is ….
